About the Event

Satellite observations for preparedness, response, and resilience

The NAE regional member-led event on “Earth Observations from Space for Hazards and National Security” will bring together leaders from academia, federal agencies, industry, the national labs, and the national security community to examine how satellite observations can support preparedness, response, and resilience in the face of growing environmental risks.

The meeting will highlight advances in remote sensing, artificial intelligence, data science, and decision-support systems for monitoring hazards such as floods, droughts, wildfires, extreme heat, storms, landslides, and coastal threats.

Particular attention will be given to the translation of NASA and other space-based observations (including commercial satellites) into actionable products for emergency management, infrastructure protection, defense readiness, food and water security, and insurance and financial risk assessment.

The meeting will help identify gaps, opportunities, and partnerships needed to strengthen national security and societal resilience through the effective use of Earth observations from space.

Conference Themes

Three themes for the next generation of Earth observation

  1. An Earth observation satellite with extended solar arrays in orbit above clouds

Theme 1: Emerging Technologies and Commercial Satellites

Explore advancements in Earth observation technologies and the expanding capabilities of commercial satellite systems.

  2. Full-disk view of Earth showing tropical storm systems over the Pacific Ocean

    Theme 2: Operational Environmental Intelligence

Examine how Earth observation data can support operational environmental monitoring, decision-making, hazard assessment and national security.

  3. A radar imaging satellite orbiting above Earth's cloud-covered surface

Theme 3: Integration of Sensors, AI and Models for Disaster Resilience

Explore the integration of satellite and ground-based sensors, artificial intelligence and predictive modeling to improve disaster preparedness and resilience.
